What are the legal requirements to purchase a handgun in California?

In California, purchasing a handgun involves a few important steps designed to promote responsible ownership.

• You must be at least 21 years old.
• You must pass a background check.
• You must complete a Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) test unless you’re exempt (such as certain law enforcement or military personnel).
• All handgun purchases must go through a licensed dealer.
• There’s a mandatory 10-day waiting period before you can take possession of the firearm.
