← Frequently Asked Questions

Is tactical first aid different from standard first aid training?

Yes, and the difference matters if you work in security, law enforcement, or any high-risk environment. Standard first aid prepares you for everyday injuries and illnesses in a stable setting, like a workplace or home. Tactical first aid, sometimes called first aid in a tactical environment, prepares you to treat life-threatening injuries while the scene is still dangerous.

Key differences include:

  • Environment – Tactical training assumes an ongoing threat, not a controlled setting.
  • Priorities – The focus shifts to stopping severe bleeding and treating penetrating trauma, since these are the most common causes of preventable death in violent incidents.
  • Sequence of care – You'll learn to assess scene safety first, then apply care under pressure rather than waiting for the environment to be secure.
  • Equipment – Tourniquets, hemostatic gauze, and chest seals play a bigger role than in a standard first aid kit.

If your role puts you anywhere near potential violence, active shooter response, or security work in unpredictable settings, tactical first aid gives you skills that standard courses simply don't cover.
