What certifications do I need before applying for security jobs in California?

The certification you need depends on the type of security position you're pursuing, but most security professionals in California start with a BSIS Guard Card. The Guard Card is issued through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) and is the minimum requirement for working as a security officer in the state.

If you're looking to expand your opportunities, additional certifications such as Exposed Firearms Permit, Baton Permit, Pepper Spray Certification, or First Aid/CPR training can make you a more competitive candidate and may be required for certain positions. Some employers prefer applicants who already hold these certifications because it reduces onboarding time and demonstrates commitment to the profession.
